Korean Pancakes (Pajeon): Simple and Delicious

Have you ever tried Pajeon? These crispy, savory Korean pancakes are one of Korea's most beloved comfort foods β€” perfect as a snack, a side dish, or enjoyed on a rainy day with a glass of Makgeolli (Korean rice wine). The best part? The Pajeon recipe is so simple you can make it today!

At omune.de β€” Europe's first K-Culture Select Shop β€” you'll find everything you need to bring authentic Korean cooking into your home. Let's make this amazing Korean pancake together!

What is Pajeon? πŸ₯’

Pajeon (νŒŒμ „) comes from the Korean words pa (파, green onion) and jeon (μ „, pancake). It's a savory batter pancake loaded with green onions and, optionally, seafood, kimchi, or other vegetables.

In Korea, Pajeon is famously eaten on rainy days β€” the sound of rain is said to resemble the sizzling of batter in the pan. What a beautiful tradition! 🌧️

Popular Pajeon Varieties

  • Haemul Pajeon – With seafood (shrimp, squid)
  • Kimchi Jeon – With kimchi mixed into the batter
  • Sogogi Pajeon – With beef
  • Classic Pajeon – Just green onions, simple and delicious

Ingredients (Serves 2)

Batter

  • 150g all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp rice flour (for extra crispiness!)
  • 1 egg
  • 200ml ice-cold water
  • Β½ tsp salt
  • Β½ tsp sesame oil

Toppings

  • 6–8 green onions, cut into 8cm pieces
  • Optional: 100g shrimp or squid

Dipping Sauce (Yangnyeom Ganjang)

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • Β½ tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • Β½ tsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)

Step-by-Step Pajeon Recipe

Step 1: Make the Batter

Mix flour, rice flour, and salt. Add the egg and ice-cold water and stir briefly β€” lumps are fine! A splash of sesame oil at the end adds great flavor.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Don't overmix! Lumpy batter = crispier pancakes.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

Combine all dipping sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.

Step 3: Heat the Pan

Heat a non-stick pan (24–26cm) over medium-high heat with 2 tbsp of oil. The oil must be really hot before adding the batter!

Step 4: Cook the Pajeon

Pour half the batter into the pan and spread evenly. Lay the green onions on top, then drizzle a bit more batter over them. Cook for 4–5 minutes until golden and crispy underneath, then flip and cook for another 3–4 minutes.

Step 5: Serve!

Slice into pieces and serve with the dipping sauce. Enjoy! πŸ₯’
